Q: What is Avandia and how is it used?
A: Avandia (rosiglitazone maleate) increases the sensitivity of insulin receptors to improve control of blood sugar levels of diabetes patients. Approved by the FDA in 1999, Avandia can be used in combination with insulin and other medications for patients with type-2 diabetes. Studies have shown that the drug can put patients at risk of developing serious and potentially fatal side effects. In May 2007, the FDA issued a safety alert for Avandia.
